The organism in charge of the application of the Islamic law in the north of Indonesia, has proposed a law that punishes the theft with a hand amputation. Besides, it plans to punish with punches those who practice gambling games.

The theft article establishes that those who are found guilty of stealing anything valued in the market in 94 grams of gold, will be punished with the amputation of one hand.

The Government of Indonesia in the year 2002, introduced the “sharia” in Aceh as a part of the negotiations to put an end to the independent conflict in the area, which has lasted about three decades and has caused over 15 thousand deaths.

Since that moment, the provincial authorities have incorporated the precepts of the Koran in the law. The sharia contemplates to punish those who practice gambling games by beating them up. It also makes women cover their heads when they are in public and it bans the consumption of alcoholic beverages.
