Record October gaming profits despite baccarat losses

Nevada Casinos established a new record in October with $1.062 billion in total winnings. However, the casinos in the Carson Valley area won just $10.3 million, that is 9.4% less than in October 2005. The reason for this maybe the fact that the casinos in that area depend on weekend visitors and this year October had one less Saturday than in 2005.

Overall, profits were just one-third of a percent more than last October. Still, Control Board Analyst Frank Streshley believes it was a strong month since baccarat earnings were quite poor. They fell 54% in traditional baccarat and almost 63% in mini-baccarat.

“Primarily, I blame the win percentage, which was less than half the 11.5 percent gaming experts consider normal for baccarat,” Streshley said. Profits total in the Strip were of 5.6%, because the majority of baccarat games are located there.

October’s numbers also show that the state collected $70.8 million in gambling taxes, one-quarter percent less than in the prior year.
